Nourrir mes chiens avec des légumes

Feeding my dogs with veggies

Dogs don’t necessarily need fresh veggies in their bowls but adding a little green here and there might just as well add a nice vitamin touch to their daily nutrition.

Here are the top choices in our household, and why they are beneficial to your dog’s health.

 Our dog’s favorites:

 Carrots

The go-to when it comes to natural and healthy snacks, they are low in calories!

Source of Vitamin A, it naturally contains anti-oxidants and works as an anti-inflammatory agent. Vitamin A boosts your dog’s immune system and also does wonders to the skin and hair.

Carrots also contain Vitamins B, C D, E and K, and contain nutrients that can improve your dog’s eye health (has proven to be effective on breeds subject to cataract issues).

Carrots contain fibers that improve your dog’s digestion and also are a natural way to keep your dog’s oral health in check.

You’ll have to try different methods to feed your dog with carrots, one of my own prefers it when it’s cooked, while the other one prefers it raw!

 Zucchinis

Also very low in calories, zucchinis are a go-to snack for dogs that have a tendency to gain weight. This tasty snack provides a sense of satiety rather quicky and is low in cholesterol.

Zucchinis are full of fibers which facilitate digestion and full of vitamins to boost your dog’s immune system. Zucchinis are an excellent source of Vitamin C which will boost your dog’s energy levels all the while taking care of their joints.

Last but not least, zucchinis contain plenty of minerals that will help hydrate your dog and also maintain their muscle mass.

Again, my younger dog prefers to eat them raw, while my older one prefers them cooked! Make sure the portion is adapted to your dog’s size (maximum 200gr per 10kg).

 Cucumbers

Cucumbers contain 95% water and are again, super low in calories. No fats, no carbs!

It can work wonders on overweight dogs and can also be used as treats for those who suffer diabetes.

They contain Vitamin C and K to preserve your dog’s energy levels and joints. Some also say cucumber can prevent cancers, arthritis and heart diseases.

Another significant benefit is that natural components contained in cucumbers can fight against your dog’s bad breath.

 Other dog-friendly veggies:

  • Green beans
  • Peas
  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower
  • Beets
  • Celery
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Butternut Squash

Make sure to feed your dogs with plain veggies (no sauce, no seasoning) and keep in mind that veggies shall not exceed 10% of their daily food intake. They are carnivores, after all!
